Hand Washing- Pepper Experiment

• Place a pinch of pepper in a bowl of water. The pepper represents germs. You can talk about how the germs are spread out around the water.

• Next, place a drop of soap in the center, and watch the pepper “run away” to the sides. It’s pretty cute to see their faces in awe when the my scatter away! This is where you can talk about how germs don’t like soap, and they run away from soap. This is an excellent reason to give them on the importance of using soap versus just water for hand washing.

Stay tuned for our next experiment, that compares washing with and without soap, and also gives a tip for making sure we go the full, recommended 20 seconds.

We should always be diligent with our hand washing, but now, it’s more important than ever!
